Penny Auction News

alt

In a previous article we discussed several pitfalls many failed penny auction sites have fallen into. After a few months of penny auction watching, a few more things have come clearer as to what else can be problematic for a site.

In the end it all boils down to money, funding, planning, and staying the course with your plan.

A flawed and stale plan though tends to aid in a site's demise.  When running an penny auction, your plan needs to be an agile one that changes with the ebbs and flow of a site's startup period.  Let's face it, in the beginning, there will be a lot of bids purchased as all your members are new and will need to have enough to get aquainted with the process of penny auctions.  This can be exciting activity for the site and the promise of a steady stream of purchases start dancing in your head.

Bidding will also be a flurry of activity in the beginning as well, so auction prices generally go above expectation.  So you now have both a quite a few new members and maybe some experienced bidders on your site.  Many of those new to penny auctions may stop bidding before buying more bids, or may only bid with the free registration bids or coupon bids.   Your plan needs to account for these bidders to never purchase another bid on your site.  If they ask for refunds, you need to have those funds on hand.  Bids are an accrued currency, that or not expensed until they are placed on an auction.

ADVICE:  Keep your site's bid back balance available at all times to know how much is owed if refunds are requested.  Have this $$ available in an account at all times.

Although it is nearly impossible to predict bidding patterns on any one auction, or a particular item, or a particular day, you should have data available to monitor the auction history after a certain time period of being open.  What is the demographics of your bidders... Young, older, senior citizen.  All these things can help determine your bidders habits if your site is shipping and keeping bidders through advertising.  A good script should provide you tools for these data analysis points.  Are more bid packs only purchased when your site runs discounts, dealz, etc?  Are more bids purchased near the beginning of the month (think Social Security income, or after bills are paid)?  What time of the year is busiest for a site?  Penny Auction industry tends to be slower after new years, and busier during the Christmas shopping season.  Your site plan needs to adapt to these changing patterns if you want to survive.

ADVICE:   Keep an eye on your site traffic statistics, utilize google, compete, yahoo analytics to determine some of this.  Use script tools to analyze auction, products, bidder, and bidpack purchase data.  Adapt auction site spending according to these numbers.  Analyze other site data at places like AllPennyAuctions to get a better understanding of these numbers industry wide.

A return of the VIP free penny auction contests?

Penny Auction Help VIPRecently a couple members of the penny auction forum here at Penny Auction Help asked about the possibility of a return of the VIP contests following a new users post about becoming a VIP. As many of you know the VIP contests had been halted almost a year ago now (wow, time flies!) based mostly on the time constraints involved in setting them all up and a general lack of participation.

Since it has been so long, we sent out emails to our mailing lists and have received a fair amount of interest in a return of the VIP. So we have decided that we will in fact give it a go again to see how the turn out looks. VIP contests are being targeted for an April return, with exact dates of the contests to be announced.

Interested penny auction sites may donate bids for the contests.

The first step in setting up the VIP contests is to gather bid donations from interested penny auction sites. If your penny auction site is interested in donating a bidpack for the upcoming contest please email us. Bidpacks may be in any size, or amount.

Donating sponsors receive their logos and site information attached at each auction. All auctions will be run at HogitUp.com. The auction details page will include a link to the donating sponsor site. Each site will also be named in our official emailing about the upcoming VIP contests. Our email lists include almost 1000 penny auction bidder emails collected during our 3 years of involvement in the penny auction community. Donating to the contest could be a great way to gain some new attention for your penny auction site! Contact us today if interested in sponsoring VIP auctions.

How VIP contests work

Penny Auction Help VIP auctions are created at HogitUp.com using the bidpacks donated by sponsors. These auctions are free to play and free to win. We do not charge any fees whatsoever. Generally we have a requirement for entry, such as posting in the forum, liking us on Facebook, or similar. Once you have obtained VIP status you are activated for the VIP contest. VIP auctions automatically credit each VIP member with 50 bids per auction. When the timers start, so does the bidding. Using your bids wisely may allow you to be the top bidder when time expires. That bidder wins the VIP auction. Penny Auction Help then emails the donating site the official results and requests the bids be credited to winner. Note that winners must advise PAH if they have a different username at the sponsor site for proper crediting. That's it! Just plain old free bidding fun thanks to our sponsor sites.

Stay tuned to Penny Auciton Help, and make sure you join our mailing list if you're not already on board for official VIP contest information.

1 pennywin dot com

Recently visited a newer penny auction site, 1pennywin.com. So far there seems to be some positive buzz on how to engage, entertain, and retain bidders for auctions. Focus on customer service, communication and a level playing field for all players seem to be priorities at 1pennywin.com. Unlike most startup penny auction sites, which fail miserably at these qualities, 1pennywin has figured out how to excel.

1. 2-level Referral system : Each time you refer someone to 1pennywin, you get paid for every bidpack they purchase(forever, not just the first bidpack purchase). Payment is in the form of 10% Bids in your account of the bidpack they buy, or equivalent dollars in PayPal cash. Now if that person refers a new player to 1pennywin.com, you then get 5% Bids in your account of their bid purchases, or cash equivalent. Again.. FOREVER.

2. Unique auctions : 1pennywin has some very unique auctions. I won't go into them here because the rules are complex for each, but many of these auctions payout multiple winners, and some of them return your promotional bids back to you.

a. Odd Numbers pays 1,2,3,5,7,9 place bidders. These are unique bidders.

b. 10cent auction pays a dollar for each multiple of .10 in the auction, and $10 for each time the auction reaches a multiple of $1.00.

c. $2/bidder auction, which pays the winner in Amazon credit depending on how many bidders enter the auction. So if 10 bidders play the auction, the winner will get $20.00 Amazon Credit.

3. WinLimit Levels: Multiple limit levels based on time and dollar amounts.

4. Tag Limits: Does the Tag and Defend feature ruin your auction site, or irritate you as a bidder? 1pennywin has implemented tag limits. Limiting bidders how many auctions per week they can place the first bid.

5. Beginner/Novice Auctions: Again, another way to keep the experienced bidders from taking all the good stuff.

6. Free Bids have valued:   1pennywin's BuyItNow feature allows you to use 75% of your paid bids ($0.75/bid) toward the item's BuyItNow price.  The BuyItNow price on 1pennywin reflects a price just slightly above the current retail value of the item.  It is not based on the MRSP of the item, but based on what you would find at Amazon.com.  Here's the kicker.. if you win promotional bids at auction, or win them some other way, these are worth $0.30/bid toward BuyItNow, unlike other sites who give them no value.  You cannot buy promo bids, and they are only available by joining auctions with them attached.

7. Communication and Transparency:  1pennywin's owner, Tim Russell,  communicates to his players on almost a daily basis with site news.  Many times its about the day's new auctions, but sometimes he gives you insight on what it takes to run a penny auction as an owner.  1pennywin utilizes Your-PA Script which has one of the most transparent features around.  If you like AllPennyAuctions, then 1pennywin is just for you.  All bidder data is right there on the site.  Complete win and auction history. Do you homework without speculating on the accuracy of APA.

Recently a new member of our penny auction forum introduced us to a penny auction site that is willing to donate to charity. We decided to contact them and see if we could find out more information for our penny auction visitors here at PennyAuction Help.

tickThe new site is called CharityTick.com and here is what they had to say about their new penny auction site.

Our Unique Auction website, Charitytick.com, is located in the enclave of Crown Heights, in Brooklyn.

People living anywhere within the United States can participate in the services our site has to offer. This can still benefit places outside the U.S., as many American Charities offer their services on a global scale.

The auctioneers and bidders on our site are rest assured that the credit cards processed on Charitytick.com are privacy secured, as we have them checked out via the notarized 'Authorized.net.'

Instructions are clearly laid out and presented to accommodate everyone in animated video tutorials, text formatted paragraphs, and picture graphs. Any further questions are welcomed through our This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it email address, as well as the direct 'Contact Us' fill out page provided on our site.

Exclusively offered, are a wide range of auction items to be won through our Organizations listed. These various items include anything from gift cards and electronics, to blocks of pure silver and worldwide vacation/travel packages at ridiculously low prices.

Currently, the amount of auctions that one bidder can win is unlimited.

Our bid packages to purchase consist of anywhere from 15 to 200 bids.

Our site is made unique from other Penny Auction sites, in that 87% of the proceeds of each auction go straight to the Charity of their choice, with just 10% going to site maintenance and 3% to credit card processing.

This prevents the waste of any single penny, as even if the auction was not won, the money (a couple of cents) went to a cause in need of it, leaving everyone at the receiving end of things.

We also host a lot of members who have charity money set aside in any case, and our site is simply a platform , made easy for the channeling of their tithing money.

Happy Bidding!
